PC Market Growth in 2023: Lenovo’s Yang Yuanqing Predicts Recovery in the Second Half

The PC market growth in 2023, which has faced significant declines after a recent peak, is now showing signs of recovery. According to recent reports from major institutions, sales for leading PC manufacturers worldwide have continued to decrease. However, Lenovo Group Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing predicts that the market may see a resurgence as early as the second half of 2023.

The PC Market’s Current State

Following a period of strong growth, the PC market has entered a phase of decline. According to recent data, leading PC manufacturers, including Lenovo, have reported continuous drops in sales. In fact, market research agency Counterpoint Research revealed that global PC shipments fell to 56.7 million units in the first quarter of 2023—a year-on-year decrease of 28%. This represents the lowest shipment volume in the first quarter in the past decade.

Yang Yuanqing’s Optimistic Prediction

During Lenovo’s 2023 Global Suppliers Conference held in Tianjin on May 17, Yang Yuanqing offered an optimistic outlook for the PC market. He mentioned, “Although PCs are undergoing some inventory adjustments, the actual demand reflected in activation is much better than shipments. I believe that the sluggish market is nearing its bottom, and it may be as early as the second half of 2023 when PCs will experience growth again.”

Yang also emphasized the importance of preparing for this potential growth, as Lenovo maintains its position as the world’s leading PC manufacturer. Even amid the market’s current downturn, the company continues to outperform competitors like HP, Dell, Apple, and Asus, which have all experienced a decline in sales.

A Strong Recovery in Sight for the PC Market

Despite the current inventory-clearing phase, industry experts suggest that the PC market could improve in the second quarter of 2023. While shipments may continue to decline, demand for PCs is expected to rise again by the second half of the year. This aligns with Yang Yuanqing’s forecast, where he believes that the PC market will gradually recover, signaling the potential for renewed growth in the latter half of 2023.

As the industry recovers from its recent slump, the key to future success lies in understanding and adapting to evolving consumer demand. The predicted growth in the second half of 2023 represents a turning point for the PC market and offers a glimmer of hope for companies like Lenovo.
