Apple Leads Global Tablet Market, Followed by Samsung and Huawei

According to IDC data, the global tablet market showed strong growth in the third quarter of 2023. Shipments increased by 20.4% year-on-year, reaching 39.6 million units. This growth follows a weaker performance last year. Notably, this year marks the first time since the iPad’s 2010 debut that Apple hasn’t launched a new iPad.

Apple’s Continued Market Dominance

Despite not releasing a new iPad this year, Apple remains the leader in the tablet market. In the third quarter, Apple shipped 12.6 million iPads. However, its annual growth rate was just 1.4%. This was mainly driven by strong back-to-school season sales of the new iPad mini. As a result, Apple’s market share decreased from 37.7% last year to 31.7% this year.

Apple’s market performance remains strong, especially with the release of two iPad Pros featuring OLED displays and M4 chips. The company also introduced two new iPad Airs (2024) with M2 chips. A new 13-inch iPad Air offers a more affordable option for large-screen users.

Samsung’s Strong Performance in the Tablet Market

Samsung also saw positive results in the third quarter, with tablet shipments growing by 18.3% year-on-year. However, this growth rate was slower than the overall market’s growth of 20.4%, leading to a slight decrease in Samsung’s global tablet market share, which fell from 18.2% to 17.9%.

Samsung launched high-end tablets, such as the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S10+, equipped with AI features. However, the bulk of the company’s tablet sales were driven by the more affordable Galaxy Tab A9 series, which resonated with budget-conscious consumers.

Amazon’s Growth in the Tablet Market

Amazon made a significant leap, ranking third in the tablet market with shipments of 4.6 million units. The company’s shipments grew by an impressive 111.3% year-on-year, largely driven by Prime Day promotions. The addition of AI features to the Fire HD 8 model helped Amazon increase its market share from 6.6% last year to 11.6% this year.

Huawei and Lenovo’s Performance in the Tablet Market

Huawei also showed remarkable growth, with a year-on-year increase of 44.1% in tablet shipments. This growth rate is more than double the global market growth, as Huawei shipped 3.3 million tablets during the third quarter. The company’s market share increased from 6.9% to 8.2%.

Lenovo, on the other hand, saw modest growth of 14.7%, shipping 3 million units. Despite this increase, the company’s market share declined slightly from 8% to 7.6%.

Global Tablet Market Overview

In total, global tablet shipments reached 39.6 million units in the third quarter of 2023, a significant increase from 32.9 million units in the same period last year. The top tablet brands, including Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and Huawei, have played a key role in this market expansion.
